Speech and Debate
The Speech & Debate Team is centered around developing skills not just for competition, but for your whole life. In debate, develop skills for academic arguments and persuasion, while learning team collaboration and critical thinking skills. In Speech, discover your ability to captivate an audience through your unique ability of self expression, memorization, and even dramatic performance.
Whether you're a trained rhetorician or just enjoy heated and educational discussions, come hone your skills and experience the empowering effects of argumentation in Forensics!

🏆 State Tournament Results, March 2024
At the state tournament, Oakland Catholic was one of two schools in the entire state to advance TWO debaters to the elimination rounds of Lincoln Douglas Debate. In addition, we are proud to be bringing home the State Runner Up award in Lincoln Douglas Debate. Sydney Sword, OCHS'24 made it to the final round, losing on a tight 3-2 decision against the defending state champion. This is a huge achievement for Sydney, but also for OC. Additionally, Mia Flaherty, OCHS'24 made it into the elimination rounds for the same event. Congratulations to all those chosen to represent the team at the state level.
Join the OC Speech & Debate Team!
Speech and Debate is unique as an extracurricular in the way that it helps students develop and practice skills in communication, critical thinking, and public speaking. This both builds on and improves student participation in their classes and generally helps promote independence in thinking, as well as promotes discovery about global issues and current events.
"I can tell that I am a better critical thinker because of debate."
"My time on the team has built my self confidence."
"I can now think more quickly on my feet."
This activity not only will help you grow in your communication skills, but also doubles as a tight group of friends, since the team spends many Saturdays and days after school together. It's never too early (or too late) to start the process of joining!
