The following opportunities are available to Oakland Catholic High School students through local Colleges, Universities, and businesses. These opportunities are presented to our students so they can have first hand experiences in the fields that interest them most.

Citiparks Aquatics is now hiring Lifeguards and has two upcoming training classes. Classes are held at the Oliver Bath House in the South Side. Please call the Aquatics Office at 412-323-7928 for registration and more information.

May 11, 2019 - UPMC Introduction to Athletic Training

UPMC Sports Medicine is proud to offer our semi-annual workshop for high school students who are interested in a career in Athletic Training or who wish to enhance the skills they use in their daily high school athletic training rooms. Students will be exposed to elements of our key topics through lecture with an emphasis on hands-on practice of techniques and procedures. Lab time has been set aside to focus on the skills students are able to utilize in their high school athletic training environments. The schedule also includes a session with a collegiate program director who will present on how to prepare for college as an athletic training major. Click here for more information.

June 17-20, 2019 - Emerging Global Leaders Seminar

The Emerging Global Leaders Seminar is a free, 4-day immersive program designed to help high school students understand and think critically about their world—and the various issues, connections, and perspectives within it. This summer, the seminar will focus on Goal 16 of the Sustainable Development Goals: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. Students meet and learn from individuals doing amazing and inspiring things that impact their communities in Pittsburgh and around the world.

June 23 -28, 2019 - Summer Business Institute, The Catholic University of America

The Catholic University of America Summer Opportunity

-2019 Summer Business Institute (SBI) - Application deadline is May 1st

- SBI is a great opportunity for rising high school juniors and seniors to explore different areas of business, experience college life, make valuable connections, and strengthen their college application.

The total program cost is $500. This includes tuition, housing, meals, and excursions.

June 23 - July 13, 2019 - Pre-Collegiate Summer Programs, Case Western Reserve University

Case Western Reserve University’s Pre-Collegiate Summer Programs fully immerse ambitious high school students in a college curriculum, conversations and activities. Learn more about the curriculum, program costs, and how to apply here.

The program runs June 23 - July 13, 2019. Application deadline is May 1 for U.S. citizens and April 15 for international students. Review of applications begins March 1.

June 23 - July 19, 2019 - STEM Summer Academies (4 Sessions), Saint Francis University

Saint Francis University’s STEM Summer Academies are one week programs in engineering, mathematics, computer science, aviation, health sciences, biology, and chemistry designed to provide unique experiences for talented high school students entering their junior or senior years. University of Pittsburgh's CoolChinese Summer Program

CoolChinese, A Pitt Chinese Summer Camp is open to 9th-11th grade students who have little or no experience of learning Chinese.

June 24 - August 2, 2019 - Summer Journalism Institute, Boston University (3 Sessions)

Boston University's Summer Journalism Institute for students ages 14 to 18.

Each two-week session at the Institute provides an equal mix of inspiration and instruction from working reporters, presented in three daily blocks:

  1. Classroom: A review of journalism fundamentals with reading and writing assignments following the university's college text.
  2. Newsroom: A hands-on environment led by a professional reporter where student teams cover real news events in the city.
  3. Special: An opportunity to tour local newsrooms, hear lectures on media law and the Freedom of Information Act, learn from investigative reporters, and visit nearby colleges.

Plus, students experience a taste of college life and explore a first-class city, with visits to Boston's historical and cultural landmarks.

Three sessions will be offered:
Session 1: June 24 to July 5
Session 2: July 8 to July 19
Session 3: July 22 to Aug. 2

June 25-28, 2019 - Prepare to Care, Carlow University

Prepare to Care - This four-day workshop introduces you to careers in the fields of health care and health sciences. It is open to all high school students entering grades 9-12 interested in exploring the healthcare professions. Click here for more information!

June 25-28, 2019 - Summer Science Nation, Carlow University

This program introduces you to career options in science. Through hands-on lab experiments, field trips to Pittsburgh's research and industry facilities, and meetings with scientists in the field. Click here for more information!

June 30 - July 12, 2019 - Summer Scholars Program (Session I), Miami University of Ohio

Miami University will host two sessions of our Summer Scholars Program this July. The Summer Scholars Program provides a rich, early college experience for academically talented rising high school juniors and seniors from across the globe. Students will join an engaged community of learners for an intense, two-week, on-campus program exploring a topic of their choice with an acclaimed Miami faculty member. July 15-19, 2019 - Health Career Academy, University of Pittsburgh

The Health Career Academy will take place for five days, July 15-19, 2019 on the main campus of the University of Pittsburgh. The academy is designed for academically inclined current ninth and tenth grade students who are interested in learning about opportunities in various health careers and the academic preparation necessary for these careers. Students will meet and talk to practicing health care professionals, engage in health career activities, learn to monitor vital signs, engage in hands on medical procedures, learn basic medical terminology, and receive training in leadership skills. The program brings 50 students together to learn about health careers.

July 22-26, 2019 - Cyber Camp, University of Pittsburgh

Air Force Association Cyber Camp for High School Students: July 22–26, 2019

Pitt Institute for Cyber Law, Policy, and Security (Pitt Cyber), in partnership with Robert Morris University, is hosting a free week-long Cyber Camp. Designed for all skill levels, this year’s camp will focus on cyber ethics and systems security.

Online registration opens February 18.

July 22-26, 2019 - RxPLORE Professional Summer Camp, University of Pittsburgh

Pitt's RxPLORE Professional Summer Camp is for rising juniors and seniors.

RxPlore is a professional summer camp designed by current student pharmacists for high school students to explore their interest in the health-care field. This summer camp is a five-day overnight program on the University of Pittsburgh campus that provides a different insight of the many careers within pharmacy each day. The application is completely free, but there is a $50 deposit required upon acceptance. The cost of the summer camp is $350, however we are able to provide financial assistance if needed so do not let this turn anyone away!
