Student Opportunities


The following opportunities are available to Oakland Catholic High School students through local Colleges, Universities, and businesses. These opportunities are presented to our students so they can have first hand experiences in the fields that interest them most.

June 16-29, 2019 - Summer Gifted Program, Wesleyan College

The Wesleyan Summer Gifted Program is a two-week residential experience for gifted and accelerated students from rising 9th through 12th grade. The 2019 WSGP will run from Sunday, June 16 through Saturday, June 29th. WSGP will offer programming in history, creative writing, environmental science, mathematics, physics, computer programming, and STEM.

Students stay in suite-style living in the recently-renovated Fleming Residence Hall on West Virginia Wesleyan's campus.

June 17-20, 2019 - Emerging Global Leaders Seminar

The Emerging Global Leaders Seminar is a free, 4-day immersive program designed to help high school students understand and think critically about their world—and the various issues, connections, and perspectives within it. This summer, the seminar will focus on Goal 16 of the Sustainable Development Goals: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. Students meet and learn from individuals doing amazing and inspiring things that impact their communities in Pittsburgh and around the world.

June 24-28, 2019 - Pharmacy Exploration Day, Duquesne University

Duquesne University's Pharmacy Exploration Day: Do you like school subjects such as chemistry, biology, and math? Thinking about entering a health care field, but not sure which one suits your interests?

Duquesne University's School of Pharmacy is hosting a one-day summer camp for high school students freshman to rising seniors. You will learn about the different career options for pharmacists and explore the field of pharmacy alongside University faculty and students.

June 24 - August 2, 2019 - Summer Journalism Institute, Boston University (3 Sessions)

Boston University's Summer Journalism Institute for students ages 14 to 18.

Each two-week session at the Institute provides an equal mix of inspiration and instruction from working reporters, presented in three daily blocks:

  1. Classroom: A review of journalism fundamentals with reading and writing assignments following the university's college text.
  2. Newsroom: A hands-on environment led by a professional reporter where student teams cover real news events in the city.
  3. Special: An opportunity to tour local newsrooms, hear lectures on media law and the Freedom of Information Act, learn from investigative reporters, and visit nearby colleges.

Plus, students experience a taste of college life and explore a first-class city, with visits to Boston's historical and cultural landmarks.

Three sessions will be offered:
Session 1: June 24 to July 5
Session 2: July 8 to July 19
Session 3: July 22 to Aug. 2

June 25-28, 2019 - Prepare to Care, Carlow University

Prepare to Care - This four-day workshop introduces you to careers in the fields of health care and health sciences. It is open to all high school students entering grades 9-12 interested in exploring the healthcare professions. Click here for more information!

June 25-28, 2019 - Summer Science Nation, Carlow University

This program introduces you to career options in science. Through hands-on lab experiments, field trips to Pittsburgh's research and industry facilities, and meetings with scientists in the field. Click here for more information!

June 30 - July 12, 2019 - Summer Scholars Program (Session I), Miami University of Ohio

Miami University will host two sessions of our Summer Scholars Program this July. The Summer Scholars Program provides a rich, early college experience for academically talented rising high school juniors and seniors from across the globe. Students will join an engaged community of learners for an intense, two-week, on-campus program exploring a topic of their choice with an acclaimed Miami faculty member. Need-based scholarships are available. More information regarding dates, deadlines, and the application is available here.

July 8-12, 2019 - SUCCEED High School Student Camp, CMU

CMU's 2019 SUCCEED High School Student Camp

SUCCEED is a free week-long summer program for high school students.

July 8-12 is a free summer camp in which rising 10th and 11th grade students explore issues related to energy, climate change, and the environment. Organized and run by PhD students in the Department of Engineering & Public Policy (EPP), there are activities, presentations, field trips, and a final project. We provide breakfast, lunch, and snacks to all students, and we can also offer students Port Authority bus passes for the week for transport to and from campus.

July 8 - August 2, 2019 - Portuguese Startalk Program, University of Pittsburgh

Portuguese Startalk Program for High School Students!

For 9th-12th graders in the Pittsburgh region who love learning about global languages and cultures.
The Startalk program runs Monday-Friday 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., July 8 - August 2, 2019 on the University of Pittsburgh Oakland Campus.

*Program is free of charge to accepted students. No previous Portuguese Required
*120 total hours of Portuguese language immersion
*Authentic cultural experiences
* Laptops available daily for duration of the program

July 9 - August 2, 2019 - Academy of Media Production, Boston University

Boston University's Academy of Media Production

Creative high school students develop their cinematic and journalistic storytelling skills producing films, videos, multi-camera productions and more at Boston University's Academy of Media Production. Learn from expert hands-on instruction while discovering educational and professional opportunities.

July 21-26, 2019 - The Summer Institute, Duquesne University

Duquesne University, The Summer Institute:

Students who are entering their junior or senior year and is looking for a fun-filled eventful summer. You will participate in a one-week on-credit academic program.

Students will stay in a university dormitory and will take classes taught by university professors and receive university credit. Students will also participate in college awareness, recreational and spiritual uplifting activities.

The Summer Institute will run July 21-26, 2019.

The Summer Institute is a FREE summer opportunity.

July 22-26, 2019 - Cyber Camp, University of Pittsburgh

Air Force Association Cyber Camp for High School Students: July 22–26, 2019

Pitt Institute for Cyber Law, Policy, and Security (Pitt Cyber), in partnership with Robert Morris University, is hosting a free week-long Cyber Camp. Designed for all skill levels, this year’s camp will focus on cyber ethics and systems security.

August 2019 - May 2020 - Youth Leadership Council, Make-A-Wish

Make-A-Wish has developed a Youth Leadership Council for students in 9th through 12th grade. This is an opportunity for students to learn about philanthropy while volunteering at Make-A-Wish, and giving back to an important cause.

August 4-10, 2019 - Sustainability Leadership Academy, Chatham University

Chatham University's Sustainability Leadership Academy

August 4-10, 2019 Eden Hall Campus

A residential camp focused on careers in sustainability for high school students. Learn leadership skills needed to be a community change agent and leave with a fully fleshed-out project plan to implement in your community. Focus topics include: equity, food, water, energy, conservation, green buildings, urban planning, transportation, community organizing, business, and more.

Full and partial scholarships available. This opportunity is open to rising 10th, 11th, 12th, graders, as well as students leaving the 12th grade.

September 14, 2019 - Tour de Cure: Ride.Run.Walk, American Diabetes Assoc - Volunteer Opportunity!

The American Diabetes Association is recruiting volunteers for the upcoming Pittsburgh Tour de Cure: Ride.Run.Walk event on Saturday, September 14, 2019 at South Shore Riverfront Park. This is an opportunity for students to get involved to be able to help in their community as well as receiving service hours. There are volunteer opportunities available on Friday, September 13th as well as Saturday, September 14th. Volunteer positions as well as time commitments can be found at https://signup.com/go/nKLQhAC or the attached sheet.

As a small token of our appreciation, each volunteer will receive a free volunteer t-shirt, food and beverage, and experience the day of festivities including live music.
