Health

Health for the whole person explores the intricate design of the human body and how each system works in harmony. When one part is injured or compromised, the whole person is affected. Throughout this course, students will study the basic anatomy and physiology of the body, with a focus on understanding what is necessary for each system to function optimally—not just physically, but mentally and spiritually as well.
We will be looking at each system of the body, how it works when healthy, how to maintain that health, and what injuries or diseases can impair its function. Because this is not an Anatomy and Physiology course, less important details of each system are not presented. Instead, the focus is on the basic information necessary for the optimal function of each system, and for the whole person to promote a lifetime of health and wellness. In addition to foundational health topics, this course is designed to be generationally relevant for today’s 9th and 10th grade students. We will engage in current, real-life issues affecting teens today including:
o Healthy screen time habits
o Sleep and stress management
o Menstrual and cycle health education
o Substance use and abuse (drugs, alcohol, vaping, etc.)
o Social media and its impact on mental health
o Personal boundaries and decision-making
