Girls of Steel Robotics Wows at Regionals

This past weekend, five OC students and the rest of the Girls of Steel Robotics Team spent two days competing in the Greater Pittsburgh FIRST Robotics Regional at California University of PA. Along with their teammates, Lauren Shovlin, Sofia Heller, Riley Doyle, Mary Laird and Nora Ostin joined forty-nine other teams in a competition that pitted robots against robots, budding engineers against aspiring techies.

After placing in the qualifying round of matches, the Girls of Steel took their robot to the finals, where their impressive machine shot kickballs, placed disks on field elements and climbed onto a 3-foot platform. For their incredible performance and sportsmanship, the team won the Gracious Professionalism Award. Coined by Dr. Woodie Flowers, FIRST Distinguished Advisor and Pappalardo Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering, MIT, "Gracious professionals learn and compete like crazy, but treat one another with respect and kindness in the process."

In addition, they placed second, qualifying them for the World Championship in Detroit this April! Congratulations to all five future STEM leaders, and good luck at your big competition next month!
