Eddie Benton Named Head Basketball Coach

Oakland Catholic High School Athletics Department is excited to announce the hiring of Pittsburgh native, Mr. Eddie Benton as the new Head Girls Basketball coach. Coach Benton brings over 24 years of coaching experience, 19 of those years on the sidelines coaching women’s basketball.

Most recently, Benton served as an assistant coach at Mississippi State University. Other coaching stops include University of Cincinnati, Brown University, and Duquesne University. Each program made post-season appearances in the NCAA Championship Second Round and WNIT Tournament. During his years as head coach at La Roche College, he garnered Allegheny Mountain College Conference Coach of the Year accolades in 2011 and 2012. He led LaRoche to back-to-back Division III NCAA Women’s Tournament appearances in 2011 and 2012. His credentials as assistant coach and head coach are impressive.

A standout student athlete, Benton played at the University of Vermont from 1992-96, concluding his career as the Catamounts all-time leading scorer with 2,474 points. He earned First Team All-America East honors four times, won the 1996 Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award as the nation’s top point guard under six feet, and captured the 1996 Bob Cousy Award as New England’s top point guard. Benton went on to play professionally in the Continental Basketball Association, Israel, and Venezuela. Benton served as a men’s student assistant at Vermont during the 1996-97 season, earning a bachelor’s degree from Vermont in 1997.

Coach Benton brings a wealth of knowledge, wisdom, and extensive athletic experiences. He uses basketball to teach life lessons and emphasizes the importance of being a student athlete. Currently, he is owner and trainer of BENTFORCE BASKETBALL.

“This is a great day for the Oakland Catholic community and our basketball program,” stated Dr. Hall. “Benton is a highly regarded and respected coach in the Pittsburgh area and collegiate basketball circles.”

A formal introduction of Coach Benton as new head coach was held on Monday, June 27, 2022, at a press conference in the Auxiliary Gym at Oakland Catholic High School. He addressed the media, basketball team/families, members of the administration, and other stakeholders.

“Right now, I’m 100% committed to winning a state championship at Oakland Catholic,” Benton said. “Winning some WPIALs and winning some state championships at Oakland Catholic. That’s my goal.”
