Last Friday the Oakland Catholic Model United Nations Group traveled to Duquesne University for a Model UN Conference. The students represented 9 countries in 9 different Model UN Committees with students from High Schools across the Pittsburgh area.
The OC students acted as international delegates to discuss issues of disarmament, global cybersecurity, desertification, climate change, multinational space exploration, and preserving indigenous cultures, as well as increasing the amount of women in government positions.
Mary Laird '20 described her experience: "Today, I learned the importance of communication and diplomacy with a worldwide perspective. My partner, Jessica Huwar, OC '20, and I represented Sweden on the Security Council and advocated for efforts to stop the Rohingya crisis and strengthen international cybersecurity. It was an eye-opening chance to gain unique perspectives and work with students from many different schools."
