Over the summer, Mrs. Heidi Rinkacs and Ms. Maura Doyle participated in the Interdisciplinary Global Educators Working Group, held virtually by Pitt's Global Studies Center. The purpose was to join a group of educators from different departments within one school and create interdisciplinary curriculum.
Mrs. Rinkacs and Ms. Doyle both teach the same set of Honors Sophomores (in Honors World History II and Honors World Literature) and frequently work together through Model UN, so they both thought this would be the perfect opportunity to further extend this collaboration between the two classes.
They identified a few areas of World History and World Literature that are frequently neglected, most notably the continent of Africa, and designed a unit to fit that need, while still addressing global topics. Students will be taught about Nigeria through two novels by African authors — Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe and Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. On Wednesday September 9th, Mrs. Rinkacs and Ms. Doyle will present their work in a virtual showcase that is open to the public!
