Each December, the River City Brass Band shares the stage at Carnegie Music Hall with local choirs and soloists who delight their audience with festive tunes and fun surprises. Maestro Gourlay, recently named one of Musical America's Top 30 Professionals of the Year, dynamically directed the band and its guests, including Oakland Catholic's Chamber Singers and harpist Isabel Cardenes, OCHS '21. For its featured performance, the choir sang The Angel Gabriel by Robert A. M. Ross with Isabel on harp and Monica Veres, OCHS '19 as soprano soloist. Several seasoned musicians in attendance expressed their amazement at the impressive performance of such an intricate, high-level piece.
Of course the 'Christmas Brasstacular' wouldn't be complete without a few Christmas sing-alongs, so they also joined the other two choirs (Chatham and Belle Voci Women's Chorale) for an inspiring rendition of 'O Come All Ye Faithful', a big choral/brass band setting of 'The Magic of Christmas', and Handel's 'Hallelujah Chorus' from The Messiah. The event was live broadcast on WQED-FM and will be re-aired on Christmas Day at 1pm on WQED-FM.
What an amazing opportunity and incredible performance - congratulations to all the OCHS musicians and vocalists who made the night so memorable!
