This year, Dr. Theresa Doerfler and Mrs. Anna Beckler have something new to add to their gratitude jars: the opportunity to enhance their craft and share learnings with fellow dedicated professionals. This past weekend, the English faculty members attended the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Annual Convention in Baltimore where they each attended over a dozen 75-minute sessions that covered a wide array of topics and techniques. From "Teach Living Poets: Creating a Culture of Inquiry through Poetry" to "The Joy and Power of Story: Why Raising and Teaching Readers, Storytellers and Writers Will Change the World," the teachers engaged with presenters, attendees and even writers such as Matthew Desmond, Tommy Orange, and Tara Westover. They also spent significant time at the vendor fair, talking to publishers and content specialists.
The conference was inspiring, and both Dr. Doerfler and Mrs. Beckler look forward to sharing information with their colleagues and implementing some of their new learned items, including incorporating relevant, culturally diverse contemporary writers into the English classrooms at Oakland Catholic.
