Scholarships

The Guidance Department receives many scholarships related to specific colleges and/or universities. If you are interested in obtaining information regarding whether or not a school you are interested in offers any scholarship opportunities please stop in the Guidance Office and request to review the file on that school.

Clarence James Memorial Scholarship competition. Five finalists will compete for a total of $6,000- first place= $2,500, second place= $2,000, and remaining three finalists= $500 per student.

Completing the nomination form will result in an application packet mailed directly to the student at his/her home address. Please either complete the nomination form and return to me via e-mail or you may mail your nomination to the address found at the bottom of the form. Applicants can also download the application materials from our website. Students do not need to be nominated in order to apply.

Women In Nuclear, Westinghouse Electric Company
$2500 scholarship is being offered to a female high school senior from the Pittsburgh area. The candidate must intend to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in engineering, mathematics, or physical sciences at an accredited college/university. 2010 Freddie Fu Sports medicine Scholarship Program One scholarship will be awarded for a 6 week summer internship at the UPMC Sports Performance complex on the Southside.

Applicants must be a Senior in high school in September 2010, have a commitment to a career in sports medicine, exhibit academic excellence, leadership qualities, community involvement, financial need. Please see Guidance for details.

Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year 2010 Award Program sponsored by the America’s Milk Processors. Scholar/Athletes will receive a $7500 college scholarship, invitation to an awards weekend, an opportunity to appear in a Milk Mustache ad in USA Today.

2010 Beulah Frey Environmental Scholarship
Sponsored by the Audubon Society of Western PA. Awarded to graduating high school seniors who will major in environmental studies in a two or four year college. Scholarship applications can be obtained from the ASWP website, www.aswp.org and follow the “education” link. DEADLINE: March 31, 2010

Pittsburgh Italian Scholarship Fund
Scholarships amounting to $12,000.00 available for students attending college in the Pittsburgh area. Student must be of Italian heritage, demonstrate excellent academic performance and financial need. See Guidance for application. DEADLINE: March 31, 2010

Landmark Scholarship Award
$4,000.00 grant available for a high school senior who is a resident of Allegheny County and who demonstrates academic achievement, work experience, financial need and interest in the history, architecture and/or landscape design of the Pittsburgh region. See Guidance for application. DEADLINE: April 23, 2010.

Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship – The PHEAA is able to fund this scholarship again for the 2010-2011 academic year. Go to www.pheaa.org for application and specific requirements. DEADLINE: April 1, 2010.

The Bayer Scholars Program Duquesne University’s Bayer School of Natural and Environmental Sciences, inaugurated in the fall of 2009, accepts academically talented and motivated freshman chemistry or environmental chemistry majors. The Program admits four students each year and is open to women and minority students.

National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame The Pittsburgh chapter of the NIASHF awards scholarships of $4000 each to 5 Western PA high school Seniors every year. Requirements are: High academic achievement, financial need, athletic ability at the varsity level, May/June 2010 graduation. DEADLINE: January 31, 2010 See Guidance for application.

KFC Colonel’s Scholars Program Offers up to $5,000 per year for four years of college. Complete an online application at www.kfcscholars.org The application is available from December 1st through February 10th.

Big33 High school senior students in Pennsylvania and Ohio can apply for scholarships by accessing the Big 33 website www.big33.org.

The Princeton Prize in Race Relations Honors students in grades 9-12 who are doing work in their schools/communities to promote race relations. The Pittsburgh committee invites students to apply for a $1000 cash award for the 2009-10 school year. Prize winners will be invited to an all expenses paid trip to Princeton University for a symposium on race relations. 2010-2011 Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program This Program, funded through the Comcast Foundation, recognizes high school seniors from Comcast communities for their commitment to community service, academics, and demonstrated leadership. To acknowledge these accomplishments, recipients of the award will receive a one-time grant of $1,000. Only one senior from each high school may be nominated to apply for this award. Requirements for application are:
* Full-time high school senior currently enrolled at a high school within a Comcast Community.
* Student grade point average of 2.8 or higher.
* Demonstrate leadership abilities in school activities or through work experiences.
* Strong commitment to and involvement in community service.
* Plan to attend an accredited, nonprofit college, university, or vocational/technical school in the United States.
* Be able to verify nomination by entering the Comcast School Code (CSC), provided by the principal or guidance counselor.
* Complete and approve the terms and conditions set forth in the media release included as part of the scholarship acceptance form. If the nominee is not over the age of eighteen, the parent/guardian must complete and approve the terms and conditions set forth in the media release included as part of the scholarship acceptance form.

BURGER KING® Scholars awards are $1,000 each and may be used for educational expenses, such as tuition fees and books, during the first year of college or post-secondary vocational/technical school. Requirements are:
*Maintains a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher
*Works part-time for a minimum of 10 hours per week or 40 weeks per year
*Be actively involved in community service activities
*Demonstrates financial need (1040 form required)
*Plans to enroll in an accredited two/or four-year college, university, or vocational/technical school by Fall of the application year.

Melville Alexander Eberhardt Memorial Fund of The Pittsburgh Foundation. Requirements include graduations from a high school in Western PA, demonstrated financial need, a grade point average of at least 3.0, and completion of an essay. DEADLINE: April 14, 2010

PSECU Scholarship Program
Students can apply for one of six $6,000 scholarships, based on academics, honors, activities and an essay titled, “How Will Furthering Your Education Allow You to Put the Credit Union Philosophy of ‘People Helping People’ Into Action?” For more details, please see http://www.psecu.com/scholarships/

UNC Charlotte – Levine Scholarship is a comprehensive program that offers four years of full tuition, room and board, a new laptop computer, an $8,000 grant to implement a service project of the Scholar’s own design, and four summers of experiences.

  • Students must be applicants for freshman enrollment at UNC Charlotte in a baccalaureate program for the fall term immediately following their high school graduation. Students must be admitted to UNC Charlotte to receive a Levine Scholarship.
  • We anticipate that successful candidates will have a grade point average of 3.8 – 4.00 (unweighted) and score 1800 – 2400 on the three combined sections of the SAT or 29 – 36 on the ACT composite. Thus, while there are no minimum SAT, ACT, or grade point averages to apply for the Levine Scholarship, students must excel academically.
  • Students should demonstrate a commitment to community service, hold an academic record that reflects a sustained passion for knowledge and possess a capacity for ethical leadership that beckons fellow students toward a higher standard.

To be considered for a Levine Scholarship, your current high school seniors must first be nominated by their school counselor, principal, or teacher. The online nomination form will be available at http://levinescholars.uncc.edu starting August 25, 2009 until November 16, 2009.

Wendy’s High School Heisman Scholarship Students must be entering the senior year of high school, participate in at least one school-sponsored sport and have a “B” average or higher. Go to www.wendysheisman.com to begin the application process.

Attention Sophomore and Junior Golfers The WPGA provides scholarships to Member Club employees through the Evans Scholars Foundation. The value of these scholarships is full room/tuition. You must have worked two summers at a member club to be eligible. DEADLINE: September 30, 2009. See Guidance for Member Club list to apply for work this summer.

PHEAA New Economy Technology Program – Provides scholarships for Pennsylvania students who are pursuing higher education and training in science and technology. Students must register and be enrolled in a PHEAA approved school, maintain at least a 3.0, and commence employement in Pennsylvania in a related field within one year after completion of studies. Students must apply for a Federal Pell Grant and Pennsylvania State Grant. DEADLINE: December 31st of the academic year for which funds are sought. Federal Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program – This program is awarded by the PHEAA and may be accessed at the PHEAA website. www.pheaa.org $1500 per year for up to 4 years available for students who qualify. Eligibility requirements are noted on the website and there are NO exceptions.

Elks Scholarship
The national scholarship competition of the Elks offers 500 scholarships ranging from $4000 to $60,000 paid over four years. Please contact Debbie Raible at the Braddock Elks, 412-823-1357 for an application and details. No affiliation with the Elks is required.

Burger King Scholars – $1000 Scholarships available to high school seniors who maintain a grade point average of at least 2.5 and who work 15 hrs. per week or 40 weeks per year. Go to www.bk.com/scholars to apply. Access Key: BKS

The Pittsburgh Foundation – The Irene S. and Harry Louik College Scholarship Fund
Requirements: demonstrate special aptitude, ability or achievement in one or more of the performing arts, be a resident of Allegheny County, be a graduating senior at a public or private high school in Allegheny County, demonstrate financial need, complete an application and write a one page essay.

The Pittsburgh Foundation – Katherine Marie Ferrick/Elizabeth McCabe Memorial Scholarship. This was created to help young people enter the field of NURSING. Must be graduating from Oakland Catholic High School, major in the nursing field, maintain a 3.0 average, complete an application and include a one page essay. AFS Intercultural Programs – The AFS Global Leaders Scholars Program has been instituted to help students study abroad with AFS programs. Go to www.usa.afs.org/usa for more information.

AXA Achievers – The AXA Foundation, in association with U.S. News & World Report offers $10,000 scholarships to 52 students – one in each state, Washington DC and Puerto Rico.
$15,000 additional scholarships to 10 national winners who will also be offered internships in the AXA offices in New York City

William J. Wolf Memorial Scholarship Fund – Eligible undergraduate and graduate students of the Lutheran denomination. Award will not exceed $5000 per year for four years.

Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks – 2 awards of $60,000, 2 of $40,000, 2 of $20,000, 2 of $16,000, 2 of $12,000, 4 of $10,000, 4 of $8,000 and 482 of $4000.

Wendy’s High School Heisman Award
For the past fourteen years Wendy’s Restaurants have teamed up with the Heisman Memorial Trophy Committee to create the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award. The award honors both male and female high school students who excel in academics, athletics, and student leadership.

The Horatio Alger Pennsylvania Scholarship Programs

The Horatio Alger Pennsylvania Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to students in the State of Pennsylvania who have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity and who aspire to pursue higher education.
Eligibility:
To be eligible to apply for the Horatio Alger Pennsylvania Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
• be enrolled full time as a high school senior in Pennsylvania, progressing normally toward graduation, and planning to enter college no later than the fall following graduation;
• have a strong commitment to pursue a bachelor’s degree at an accredited institution (students may start their studies at a two-year institution and then transfer to a four-year institution);
• critical financial need ($50,000 or less adjusted gross income per family is preferred; if higher, an explanation must be provided);
• involvement in co-curricular and community activities;
• demonstrate academic achievement (minimum grade point average of 2.0);
• be a resident of Pennsylvania; and
• be a citizen of the United States

The Department of Education is launching a new brochure, Federal Aid First, a resource for students and families that explains – in simple terms – how they can apply for federal student aid and maximize more affordable, federal aid options. Federal Aid First explains the differences between federal and private student loans, the various kinds of federal student loans offered, and the dollar amounts available. Included are details on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is the starting point for obtaining financial assistance for college.
