This list will be updated as each new scholarship is made available to us. Continue to check our Oakland Catholic Guidance website for updates. The following scholarship announcements include websites for applications, guidelines, etc.

In addition, I have attached worthwhile websites for the college bound student.

Good luck to all and be sure to keep the Guidance Department informed regarding scholarship monetary awards. This information is imperative and used for Diocesan statistical purposes.

  1. The Department of Education is launching a new brochure, Federal Aid First, a resource for students and families that explains - in simple terms - how they can apply for federal student aid and maximize more affordable, federal aid options. Federal Aid First explains the differences between federal and private student loans, the various kinds of federal student loans offered, and the dollar amounts available. Included are details on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is the starting point for obtaining financial assistance for college.   2. Academic Financing Corporation – has 10 $5,000 scholarships available. No essay. Not based on GPA or financial need. http://www.academicfinancing.com. Deadline: July 31, 2008.
  3. Brazos Higher Education Service Corp has $50,000 to giveaway in the form of scholarships. Apply online until July 7, 2008. http://www.50kgiveaway.org.
  4. Wells Fargo College STEPS Program - $1,000 tuition prizes – sign up online. The Junior Statesmen Summer School for student’s leaders from 8th – 11th grade. A rigorous summer held at Georgetown, Princeton, Yale and Stanford. History, Government, Law, etc. www.jsa.org/summer.
  5. Governor’s School of Excellence is a no cost summer program designed for students wanting to enrich their education in a variety of subjects with instructors that are tops in their field. Information online: www.pgse.org.
  6. Harvard Secondary Summer School Program – a variety of programs offered to sophomores, juniors and seniors. www.ssp.harvard.edu.
  7. The Council for America’s First Freedom announces of the 15th annual “First Freedom Student Comprehensive essay contest examining the First Amendment and the history and relevance of religious freedom in America and the world today. $3,000, $1,500 and $750 available. www.firstfreedom.org. Grades 9th – 12th.
  8. The Irene S. and Harry Louik College Scholarship Fund has a scholarship available for a senior who is going to college who demonstrates special aptitude, ability, or achievement in one or more of the performing arts and/or be committed to furthering appreciation www.pittsburghfoundation.org. and to apply by May 16, 2008.
  9. 2007-2008 Rachel Carson Essay Contest/Chatham University is now available for a female junior or senior high school student, have a GPA of 3.0 and participate in volunteer or community service activities that are environmental in nature.   10. The Gates Millennium Scholars Program provides scholarships to African American students with a GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (unweighted). Additional materials are available at www.gmsp.org.
  11. The BigSun Organization is offering an annual scholarship to a deserving student-athlete. The deadline is June 20, 2008, and the amount of award is $500.00. The successful applicant will be a high school senior or be attending a post secondary institute and currently involved in some sport at that institution.
