The OC Record is the student newspaper of Oakland Catholic High School.
We publish 5 issues a year.

AVAILABLE POSITIONS:
EDITOR-IN-CHIEF (SENIOR)
This position requires a high-level of dedication, but
results in great rewards, and is a wonderful addition to your resumé.
Most colleges look at this position as the equivalent of being class
president or valedictorian. If you are thinking about pursuing
journalism in college, this is also wonderful experience.
- You MUST be able to stay after school at least several times a month, more often near deadlines.
- You should be able to dedicate at least one study hall to newspaper work (especially near deadlines).
- Coordinate reporter schedules and story ideas
- Responsible for layout of paper using Quark Xpress software=20
- REQUIRED to come in 2 days
over the summer (at a date selected by editor-in-chief, asst. editor
and myself) for a workshop on basic journalistic principles and to
organize for first meeting
ASSISTANT EDITOR (JUNIOR)
This position will give a junior an idea of what to expect
in the editorial position, especially if you are looking forward to the
editor-in-chief position in your senior year. If the
editor-in-chief is sick, or cannot meet her responsibilities, then the
assistant editor is in charge.
- You MUST be able to stay after school at least several times a semester.=20
- Will take on one of the section editor positions (see below)
- Responsible covering for any of the section editors who cannot complete their responsibilities.
- REQUIRED to come in 2 days
over the summer (at a date selected by editor-in-chief, asst. editor
and myself) for a workshop on basic journalistic principles and to
organize for first meeting
NEWS/CURRENT EVENTS EDITOR (SOPH/JUNIOR/SENIOR)
- With input from editors andother sources, make up a list of news/current events assignments for the upcoming issue.
- At the beginning of the year, checks with clubs and groups at OC to see what they have scheduled for the year.
- Check on progress of reporters with news/current events stories.
- Copyedit first through final drafts.
- Submit edited drafts to editor-in-chief.
- Write news/current events stories.
OPINION (SOPH/JUNIOR/SENIOR)
- Encourages students to send in letters to the editor.
- With input from editors, makes up a list of
editorial topics.
- Checks on progress of editorials, editorial cartoons.
- May write unsigned editorials or opinion pieces with editor.
- Copyedit first through final drafts.
FEATURES EDITOR (SOPH/JUNIOR/SENIOR)
- Originates and selects feature stories (profiles, human interest, holidays, etc.) with input from editorial board. NOTE:
Features are stories that cover things that are not breaking news, but
might be of interest to the student body. This might be a piece
on cheating, or on changes to the SAT. Think of these as more like
magazine articles. We haven’t done many of these in the past, but
I think they add a lot of substance to a paper.
- Checks on progress of reporters with feature stories.
- Copyedit first through final drafts.
- Submit edited drafts to editor-in-chief.
- Write feature stories/headlines.
OC MAGAZINE EDITOR (SOPH/JUNIOR/SENIOR)
- Originates and
selects arts/entertainment stories (book/music/movie reviews, “things
to do in Pittsburgh”, etc.) with input from editorial board.
- Checks on progress of reporters with feature stories.
- Copyedit first through final drafts.
- Submit edited drafts to editor-in-chief.
- Write arts/entertainmentstories/headlines.
SPORTS EDITOR (SOPH/JUNIOR/SENIOR)
- At the beginning of the year, checks with George to get a list of all teams, schedules, coaches, etc.
- Presents story ideas to editors for discussion, including sports profiles and other pieces with broad student interest.
- Works with photographers to make sure that sports have action shots.
- Copyedit first through final drafts.
- Submit edited drafts to editor-in-chief.
- Write sports stories/headlines.
