The
first AP Italian Language and Culture course will be offered worldwide in the
fall of 2005, followed by the exam in May 2006.
It will be the first AP course designed according to the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century. It
will be based on developing students' reading, writing, listening, and
speaking skills within a cultural frame of reference reflective of the
richness of Italian language and culture. Students are expected to

modes (interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational), and throughout the
five goal areas outlined in the Standards
(communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities). The AP Italian Language and Culture
Examination is approximately two hours and 45
minutes long. There are five sections in the AP Italian Exam. Section I consists of multiple-choice
questions that assess reading comprehension in the interpretive mode. Section II consists of three parts
that assess writing in the presentational mode: parts A and B consist of
short free-response questions testing students' knowledge of grammar, and
Part C consists of a prompt that requires the student to write an essay in
Italian on a general topic. Section
III assesses cultural understanding and requires the student to write an
essay in Italian on one of two given prompts on cultural topics. Cultural topics for AP Italian include: Italian geography
(including major cities and regions), Contemporary life in Students passing the Advanced Placement Exam (with an
acceptable score) receive college credit. Prerequisite:
